“Bossuet would get up at night to find the genius of silence and inspiration; great thoughts came to him only when he was far from futile noises and preoccupations.” – A.G. Sertillanges

How often do you spend time by yourself? And of that time, how much of it do you spend in silence? If you’re like the majority of Americans, the answer is almost never.

We spend a large amount of our time around other people.  Whether we’re at home, sitting on a train, or working at a coffee shop, we’re constantly overstimulated by noise. If you like to work from home, perhaps you have young kids interrupting your work. At the coffee shop down the street, you might find yourself fighting to concentrate as a playlist of alternative artists sing in the background and a car honks its horn at a slow pedestrian in the crosswalk. Think you’ll find silence by working in a library? Think again. The library is filled with people constantly whispering, shuffling in their seats, and pounding on their keyboards. So, even in these “quiet places” there is no relief from the noise.

So where do you draw the line between work and home when your apartment and office are one in the same? If you find it hard to develop a work life balance, you should know that you’re not alone. Many freelancers struggle in this area. Besides scheduling time to shut down your computer and exercise every day, we suggest trying to spend at least 15 minutes a day sitting in complete silence. If you’re curious about its health benefits, check out this Mayo Clinic article to learn more about how meditation can help you find balance in your life.
